Calling My Dad "Randy"

Working with family has its perks, but it also brings its own set of challenges. I have had the opportunity to work with my dad, Randy, for over nine years. It has truly been a joy. Clients or friends ask me, “How is it working with your dad?” My answer is always, “I really enjoy working with him 97% of the time.” And that is very true. No relationship (business or personal) is perfect, but I am very grateful to have learned the business from someone who is honest, talented, committed to his profession and someone I really enjoy spending time with.

One of the most common questions I get is, “Do you call him ‘Dad’ or ‘Randy’ in the office?” Since I started working with him in the Spring of 2011, I do not think I have called him “Dad” once. For the first few years, I think it was because I wanted to prove myself and calling him “Dad” did not fit into that narrative. Since then, it has just become a habit. I call him Randy or Randolph (his full name). Even outside the office, I refer to him as Randolph most of the time.

My favorite memory of working with Randy is generic but has to do with him teaching me the business. Even though I came out of college with a finance and an accounting degree, I really was not prepared for and did not know much about the wealth management business. Randy genuinely enjoyed slowing down and embracing the role of teacher. It was challenging but interesting, and I really enjoyed the process of learning how to analyze the credit of a tax-free municipal bond, how to understand the criteria involved when looking at a dividend paying stock or why incorporating a Live Well Plan into someone’s retirement is foundational.

Randy was “Dad” first, and he will always be a mentor, role model, coach and friend.
